Heavy rain has triggered waterlogging and severe traffic congestion across several parts of Hyderabad, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting more rain for Wednesday.
Jayashankar district recorded the highest rainfall in Telangana on Tuesday at 196 mm, while Hyderabad’s Musheerabad area saw the city’s highest tally at 54.5 mm, with Shaikpet, Tirumalagiri, Golkonda and Khairatabad also recording significant rainfall.
Waterlogging was reported at multiple locations, including Madhapur, Gachibowli, Miyapur, Krishna Nagar, the Hyderabad Central University campus, and railway bridges in Raniganj and Secunderabad.
The IMD has forecast heavy rain along with thunderstorms, lightning and squalls for Wednesday, issuing a yellow alert for all districts in the state, with a specific yellow alert also in place for Cyberabad.
Disaster Response Force teams from HYDRAA were deployed to clear waterlogged roads and remove fallen tree branches across affected areas of the city.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Joel Davis conducted field inspections at major waterlogging points, including Lakdikapul, Ayodhya Junction and PTI Masab Tank, reviewing drainage arrangements and traffic regulation measures.
Traffic police advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during peak hours, drive slowly and cautiously, avoid waterlogged roads, and plan journeys with additional travel time.
Motorists were also urged to follow instructions from traffic personnel on the ground and stay updated through official traffic advisories as the rain continued through the day.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has also published an emergency helpline number, 9000113667, for residents to report waterlogging and other rain-related disruptions across the city.
HYDRAA, formed by the Telangana government in July 2024, operates across the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation area along with Rangareddy, Medchal Malkajgiri and Sangareddy districts up to the Outer Ring Road, working through separate wings for disaster management, asset protection and logistics support.
HYDRAA, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring Protection agency, was set up to respond quickly to civic emergencies including flooding, encroachments and infrastructure hazards across the city.
