India lose early wickets in Colombo as debutant Saransh Jain watches on

India lost both openers cheaply on the first morning of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, slipping to 66 for 2 after 17 overs after winning the toss and choosing to bat.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for 45 after edging a delivery from Asitha Fernando onto the stumps, while KL Rahul fell earlier for 18, bowled by Lahiru Kumara.

Devdutt Padikkal, who scored a century in the first Test at Galle, has continued his innings after receiving two reprieves through dropped catches at slip.

The standout team news of the morning was the Test debut of Saransh Jain, the Madhya Pradesh off-spinner who came in for Kuldeep Yadav in India’s playing XI.

India go into the match with a 1-0 series lead after their 165-run win at Galle in the first Test, and a positive result in Colombo would seal the series.

The second Test is being played at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground and runs from August 23 to 27, with Sri Lanka fielding a much-changed side after injuries to Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis.

Devdutt Padikkal, who scored a century in the first Test at Galle, was given two reprieves through dropped catches at slip on his way to continuing his innings.

Saransh Jain, a Madhya Pradesh off-spinner making his Test debut, came in for Kuldeep Yadav in India’s playing XI for the Colombo match.

Jain earned his maiden India call-up after an impressive first-class record of more than 1,700 runs and over 150 wickets across more than 50 matches, and a strong showing on India A’s recent tour of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s playing XI for the Test includes uncapped opener Kamil Mishara, with Dhananjaya de Silva captaining the side in place of the unavailable Dinesh Chandimal.

India go into the Colombo Test with a 1-0 series lead after winning the first Test at Galle by 165 runs, powered by Devdutt Padikkal’s century and Manav Suthar’s bowling.
