KOLKATA — A 12-year-old student at Delhi Public School Megacity Kolkata, Abhiraj Shee, has been credited with 12 world records spanning memory recall, spelling speed and book publishing, according to certification bodies including the India Book of Records, Asia Book of Records, International Book of Records and World Book of Records, London.
Record adjudicators list feats such as reciting the periodic table’s elements in roughly 42 seconds, identifying and reciting 100 phonetic words in 44 seconds, and spelling 100 English words in under three minutes. Certificates reviewed for this report also credit Shee, who was 9 years old when several of the records were first set, with authoring 34 books at the time of certification — cited by International Book of Records as the youngest kid to publish the maximum number of books, and separately as the youngest kid to publish the maximum number of books in a single year. India Book of Records has separately credited him as the youngest kid whose books have been published in the maximum number of foreign languages.
School officials at Delhi Public School Megacity Kolkata say Shee has ranked first in his grade for multiple consecutive years. Director Suman Singh and Principal Tilottama Mallik have publicly recognized the student at school events, according to the institution.
The records add to a broader tally that Shee’s family says includes more than 600 awards and 800 certificates collected since 2018 across categories ranging from drawing and storytelling to coding and Olympiad examinations. Independent verification of cumulative totals of this kind is difficult, since many of the certifying competitions are run by private organizations rather than accredited educational bodies, and record-keeping standards vary between them.
Record-certification agencies such as India Book of Records and International Book of Records operate as commercial entities that document self-submitted or witnessed attempts, a model similar to regional record books elsewhere. Critics of the broader child-record industry have noted that such certifications, while requiring documented evidence, do not carry the same evaluative rigor as academic or scientific benchmarks, and some record categories are narrowly defined enough that few competitors attempt them.
Even so, Shee’s supporters point to corroborating recognition beyond the record books. He has been felicitated by West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose at Raj Bhavan Kolkata, and by representatives of Tata Consultancy Services and Indigo Airlines, according to family-provided documentation and photographs from the events.
The periodic table recitation record, which Shee’s family says was set at age 9, has drawn attention on social media clips shared by relatives, though the underlying video has not been independently timed by this publication. India Book of Records lists the achievement in its online database of certified entries.
Shee is continuing his Class 7 studies while pursuing additional Olympiad examinations and app-development projects, according to his family. Whether the pace of record attempts continues at the same rate as prior years remains to be seen, school officials said, adding that academic performance remains the school’s primary metric for the student.
