The Union Cabinet approved a draft bill on Friday proposing stricter punishments for examination paper leaks, hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the move.
The bill amends the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, raising the minimum prison term for paper-leak convictions from three years to five years.
For organised paper leaks, the bill proposes a jail term of up to 10 years along with a fine of up to Rs 10 crore.
The move follows the national outrage over the NEET-UG and UGC-NET paper leaks in 2024, which had prompted the original 2024 Act.
The bill is likely to be taken up for consideration and passing in Parliament on Monday.
