Shubman Gill has become the world’s No. 1 ranked ODI batter in the latest ICC rankings, overtaking New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell for the top spot.
Gill’s rise was driven by his performances in India’s recent ODI series against England, where he scored an unbeaten 80 in the first match and followed it up with 77 in the third ODI at Lord’s.
Mitchell, who previously held the No. 1 spot, has slipped to second after a quieter run of scores, including 65 in an opening ODI against West Indies followed by two innings of 28 each.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remain in third and fourth place respectively in the updated ODI batting rankings.
In a separate ranking update, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi jumped 230 places in the T20I batting rankings to reach 48th position, up from 278th ahead of a series against Zimbabwe.
Sooryavanshi’s rise came after he scored 151 runs across a three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, which included two half-centuries.
Gill’s climb to the top of the ODI rankings comes as he continues to lead India’s white-ball side, a role he took on in October 2025 when he replaced Rohit Sharma as ODI captain ahead of the tour of Australia.
The updated rankings reflect India’s recent tour of England, where several batters, including Gill, put in strong performances across the white-ball leg of the tour.
England won the three-match ODI series 2-1, with India’s win in the first match at Birmingham followed by defeats in Cardiff and at Lord’s, where England chased down 361 to complete a 27-run margin of victory batting first. England’s Joe Root was named Player of the Series after scoring 249 runs across the three matches.
Gill has held the India ODI captaincy since October 2025, when he replaced Rohit Sharma for the tour of Australia, and has since led the side through series against New Zealand and Australia.
