After representing some of India’s established football clubs and building a career in specialist coaching, Avijit Ghosh has relocated to Pune to join Pune Pioneers FC as their Goalkeeping Coach.
Football careers are rarely straightforward. Behind every professional appearance, tournament medal and coaching appointment are years of preparation, sacrifices, difficult decisions and the willingness to embrace new challenges. For former professional goalkeeper Avijit Ghosh, the latest chapter of that journey has taken him from Kolkata to Pune, where he has joined Pune Pioneers Football Club as their new Goalkeeping Coach.
The appointment marks an important professional step for Ghosh, who has spent much of his footballing life in West Bengal, both as a player and as a specialist goalkeeper coach. He now brings that experience to a growing football development programme in Pune, where he will oversee goalkeepers across all age groups.
His journey reflects the transition from aspiring young footballer to professional player and, eventually, a coach responsible for preparing the next generation.
Ghosh’s football career developed through the competitive football structure in West Bengal. His early playing experience included Site Athletic Club, SAIL Football Club and George Telegraph, before he progressed to Tata Football Academy.
He spent four years at Tata Football Academy between 2003 and 2007, an important period in his development as a goalkeeper.
His achievements at youth level included being part of the Bengal U-16 team that won the National Championship in 2002 and the Bengal U-19 team that secured the Dr B.C. Roy Trophy in 2006.
International exposure also formed part of his development. In 2005, he travelled to England with Tata Football Academy, where the team won the Wells Cup. In 2006, he was involved in the India U-19 setup and participated in a camp and tour to Sri Lanka.
These experiences helped prepare him for the demands of senior professional football.
Ghosh’s professional career included spells with East Bengal FC, Air India FC, Mumbai Tigers, Sreebhumi Samiti, Aryan FC and Royal Wahingdoh FC.
His time at East Bengal during the 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons was particularly memorable. He was part of the squad that won the Federation Cup in 2009–10 and the Calcutta Football League Premier Division in 2010. He was also part of the East Bengal squad that finished as Durand Cup runners-up in 2009.
His time with the Kolkata club also included participation in the AFC Cup in 2010, giving him experience of continental competition.
Ghosh subsequently represented Air India in the I-League and Mumbai Tigers in the I-League Second Division. His time with Mumbai Tigers also included a Durand Cup runners-up finish.
He later played for Sreebhumi Samiti and Aryan FC before joining Royal Wahingdoh. The Shillong-based club finished third in the 2014–15 I-League season, providing another significant experience in his playing career.
Throughout this journey, Ghosh had the opportunity to work under established coaches such as Subhash Bhowmick, Bimal Ghosh, Santosh Kashyap, Godfrey Pereira and Philippe De Ridder.
For many former professional players, moving into coaching offers an opportunity to remain connected to football while sharing the knowledge gained through years of competition.
Ghosh made that transition by specialising in goalkeeper development.
He began his coaching journey with the Hooghly District Sports Association in 2017–18 and subsequently worked with the Kalyani Football League. His experience has since included Kolkata Soccer Academy, Suruchi Sangha, Khidderpore SC, Kalighat MS, City AC, George Telegraph FC and SKM Sports Foundation.
His assignments have covered different levels of the game, including the Calcutta Football League, Reliance Development League and AIFF U-17 Youth League.
Ghosh holds an AIFF C Coaching Licence and brings nearly a decade of specialist goalkeeping coaching experience to his new role.
His background as a professional goalkeeper gives him an understanding of the technical, tactical and psychological demands of the position, while his coaching experience has allowed him to work with players at different stages of development.
Accepting the appointment at Pune Pioneers FC required more than simply changing clubs or training grounds.
Ghosh has relocated from Kolkata to Pune, while his wife and young child remain in Kolkata. It is a significant personal decision, particularly for someone whose professional and personal life has been closely connected to his home city.
His willingness to make that move reflects his belief in the opportunity and the potential of the project at Pune Pioneers FC.
Interestingly, his association with the club has a connection that goes back several years. Pune Pioneers FC Club Director Ryan Roy Shah and Ghosh previously crossed paths at Mumbai Tigers during the 2012–13 season, when Ghosh was part of the senior squad and Shah was involved with the youth setup.
Ghosh’s role will extend across the entire academy structure.
Pune Pioneers FC operate a residential football academy in Wagholi and a non-residential evening academy programme. Ghosh will oversee goalkeepers across all age groups, helping establish a more consistent approach to specialist goalkeeper development.
The position requires attention to several areas of performance, including handling, positioning, footwork, distribution, communication and decision-making. Goalkeepers must also understand how their responsibilities connect with the team’s overall playing philosophy.
Having one specialist coach working across the different age groups creates an opportunity to build continuity as young players progress through the academy.
Ghosh’s initial sessions at the club have been positively received by players, while fellow coaches have observed encouraging improvements in the goalkeepers’ work.
For Pune Pioneers FC, the appointment adds professional experience and specialist knowledge to an important area of player development.
For Avijit Ghosh, the move to Pune represents the beginning of another chapter in a football journey that has already taken him through youth championships, professional clubs, national competitions and coaching assignments.
His next challenge is to help young goalkeepers take their own steps forward in the game.
