Sensex jumps 549 points, Nifty tops 23,900 as crude oil falls 5%

Indian equity benchmarks opened higher on Monday, ending a five-session losing streak, as crude oil prices fell 5 per cent.

The BSE Sensex jumped 549.21 points, or 0.72 per cent, to open at 76,608.98, while the Nifty 50 gained 160.95 points to start at 23,928.40.

Both indices had closed the previous session at their lowest levels in over a month, with the Sensex at 76,059.77 and the Nifty at 23,767.45 on Friday.

The rebound was driven by a sharp fall in crude oil prices amid easing tensions in West Asia, with oil retreating from a two-month high hit last week.

IndiGo led the gainers on the Sensex with a 3.11 per cent rise, followed by Eternal, Infosys, Asian Paints and Bajaj Finance.

Broader markets also traded higher, with the BSE Smallcap Select Index up 1.05 per cent to 8,677.49 in early trade.
